Silver Cutlery Sets – How They Are Made
Shapes for the silver cutlery sets are cut out of metal sheets between 3 and 4 mm thick depending on the utensil and make. The sheet metal is passed through a press and the die inside punches out the blanks.

Fork blanks are put into a piercing tool which creates four prongs. Spoon blanks go into a machine called a cross roller which expands the spoon head sideways and thins out the metal at the same time.

Fork and spoon blanks then go into a machine that files their rough edges smooth.

A specialist craftsman creates a die that will stamp the design on the cutlery handles. The depth of the design is measured using a micrometer.

In the press the die embosses the pattern, bends the handle to the final curves and marks the manufacturer’s name and the cutlery material.

The forks and spoons are then pressed to their final shape. Knife handles are made from two halves. Two hollow pieces joined together, coated with flux then powdered metal is poured in which joins the pieces together. The hollow handles are filled with cement and the knife blades are added before the cement dries.

Blades are finally sharpened and all utensils are polished.
