One of the first tips about cleaning silver cutlery or any other silver item is not to do it too often because over a period of time, silver marks can be worn away.
Also, never use anything that is abrasive as it will leave small scratches that dulls the surface of the silver.
Use a small amount of liquid silver polish and cotton cloths whenever possible. Silver polish ideal for polishing flatware can be bought in a tube like toothpaste and applied by gently rubbing the surfaces with a cotton cloth.
For items that are heavily tarnished, these need to have the tarnish removed before they can be cleaned and polished. There are a number of products available specifically to remove tarnish from silver.
Getting into small designs on silver cutlery can be tricky. This can easily be done with a soft tooth brush and believe it or not – tooth paste, as long as it is not too abrasive.
Making a paste of baking soda and water is another way to clean tarnished silver. This is applied by hand and rubbed in using a soft cloth or towel. Once again, never use anything that is abrasive to clean silver as it will dull the shine and slowly ware it down and also professional products for the job produce the best results.
