The value of sterling silver never diminishes and usually retains its value as tableware too. However, silverplate has no intrinsic silver value. It is not worth trying to redeem the silver (should it be desired) and therefore has little resale value as tableware.
Sterling silver will last forever if you want to use it and take care of it. Most silverplate will last around twenty years or less depending on the amount use and care.
When choosing your sterling or silverplated pattern, choose a pattern because you like it. One that will last over the different periods of your lifetime. When choosing other tableware such as china, crystal or silverware, choose something complimentary, that matches the other items. However, the most important thing is that you like it!
